program

Summer Explosion is a very unique week of camp where we take the thrill of the television show Survivor, creatively blend it with the problem solving type challenges of Odyssey of the Mind, and mix in fun competition like that of KidNation to produce a dynamic week of creativity, problem solving, cooperation, risk taking and most of all, FUN!

Founded in the year 2000, Summer Explosion has steadily grown into a very popular week of camp. In the first year, eighteen students, mainly from two schools, participated in activities at Newtown Friends School. As we grew, we moved the camp to George School, where we now entertain more than seventy-five campers often representing many different area schools. The typical day is broken down into activity periods which vary in approach and purpose.

LARGE GROUP GAMES: We begin each day with some exciting large group games that are active and allow for campers to wake up, get the "kinks" out, and get to know one another through play. Fast-paced games such as "Jurassic Park," a type of "Capture the Flag" game, tend to be the favorite types of games. We play several creative versions of kickball, as well as some dynamic "Steal the Bacon" type games, knock-down-the-bowling-pin games, tag, chase and capture games, and of course another camp favorite "GaGa." All of the games we choose have creative twists that make them fun and challenging for the campers.

Following the game time, each group rotates to other activities.

DESIGN CHALLENGE: We place a big emphasis on creative design. Placed in small groups, but still part of a larger team, campers must work together to meet the given design challenge. All challenges evoke creative thinking, problem solving, communication, and risk taking. These challenges typically culminate at the end of the week in some "friendly" competition where campers show off their designs and test their abilities to meet the proposed challenge. Some past challenges include: making a parachute with an egg in the basket and launching it high into the air to see whether or not the egg breaks; designing a model car that operates on balloon power, which can be then morphed into a boat, seeing which holds the most weight; being the first team to assemble a complex network of PVC piping (complete with holes!) and, while holding it off of the ground, see who can overfill a Tide bottle by pouring water down the tubes; making individual mobiles using artifacts from nature, then putting them all together to make one, giant, 16-foot mobile. The list goes on and on. Please explore the photo galleries from previous years to view past challenges. These challenges provide campers an opportunity to develop creativity and leadership skills in an environment of cooperation and teamwork.

TEAM CHALLENGE: The team challenge time consists of activity-based challenges that may or may not include team competitions. Generally, the challenges promote greater cooperation, teamwork, and communication as teams work together to accomplish the various challenges. Activities in this area include: the "A" Frame Challenge, where one camper is placed in an "A" frame structure supported at the apex by lead ropes held by his/her teammates; the various challenges of our several-element low ropes course; cooperative team games like the TNT challenge where a team of campers, each with one lead of twine attached to a bull ring, must transfer a tennis ball from one stand to another without dropping it; etc. Or, one camp favorite was the making of the potato launchers and of course, launching those projectiles. One flew over 175 yards! Again, please reference our photo galleries for visuals.

COMPUTERS: Campers always love computer time, where they can continue their pursuit of interacting with modern technology. In our computer lab, campers may create a project, work on a camp slide show, or simply play a non-violent game, in the comfort of this air-conditioned facility.

SWIM: Each day, campers enjoy the beautiful 8-lane, 25-meter indoor pool. The pool depth ranges from 4' to 12'. There are no diving boards, slides, or large inflatable objects in the pool. Lifeguards are on duty. All campers are given a swim test to determine their ability to swim in the deep end. Strict rules of pool behavior are reiterated and enforced. The indoor pool is a relaxing and refreshing part of our camp day.

Lunch Included: Also included in this camp experience is a sumptuous, full cafeteria-style lunch which features hot and cold choices, a complete salad bar, an excellent deli bar, a kid-friendly side bar each day (i.e. pizza, burgers, hot dogs, or tacos), an assortment of juices or milk, and homemade baked goods for dessert.

The SE camp day is packed full of fun and excitement. It wonderfully blends creativity and fun competition but in the end, everyone is a winner through the many valuable life skills learned.

The camp day begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m.

For convenience, an after-care program goes until 5:30 p.m. for an additional $75 per week fee.
